Bricked It: How to lose millions in property
Book manuscript complete, R01 exam complete, new journey underway
Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself. - Eleanor Roosevelt
This week I submitted the rough draft of book #2 to the editors. I was about half finished in January but life got in the way and I turned my focus to my regulated financial advisor exams. R01 complete, R02-6 to go.
I was shaken from my complacency when on Monday I received a friendly but stern email to say that I’m contractually required to submit my draft by the 17th. Nothing like a deadline to spur me into action. While trapped on a boat with 40 knot plus gusts, I wrote. By Wednesday a (very) rough version of Bricked It: How to lose millions in property was complete.
The title is currently under negotiation. The editors prefer How NOT to lose millions in property. Perhaps they’re right. We’ll see when it’s published who wins that debate.
Right now I’m pleased it’s out there. It’s cathartic. New book, new direction. A pivot.
Eight years after Bricking It was published I’m slightly embarrassed at my naivety. My hubris. I mistook my luck for skill, in some ways, and believed property investment to be the holy grail toward financial security and empowerment. My new book seeks to rectify and clarify my position and provide a SAFER System for not just property investing, but investing as a whole. The book also builds on my financial coaching qualifications and Chartered Financial Planner status. Sadly I’m only chartered in Australia currently, but I’m working on that, hence the R0 exams.
As promised I’ll be releasing draft sections of the book for my paid subscribers starting today, at the end of this newsletter, and I welcome your feedback.
🎧 Turning to the pod, a recent interview with Jodie Hill, neurodivergent solicitor, ED&I consultant, and campaigner has been a popular episode. Jodie is working with government to draw up legislation to support those who are neurodivergent or experience mental health issues, particularly where it relates to the workplace. She makes a strong case for more flexible, nurturing work environments to support not just those she campaigns for but all employees.

📚 Need a summer read? I’m struggling to put down the eight book Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. Dozens of you suggested it when I asked for book recommendations on Instagram recently. With my own book deadline looming I nearly had to ask Paul to hide my Kindle so I wasn’t tempted to dip back in.
The storyline is so complex and yet simple taking you around the world and through history. I’m currently on the fourth book and find myself in the Australian outback both in the early 1900s and 2008. There are stories within stories within stories. It’s a thing of beauty that all fiction writers must aspire to. Sadly Lucinda died of breast cancer without finishing the eight book series and I believe her son took over and finished the last.
Without further ado here’s the long promised first chapter to Bricked It: How (NOT) to lose millions in property.
First here’s the initial feedback from my editor on the first few chapters:
You have a gift of writing. Of story telling. Of story teaching. I’m blown away by your chapters. The content is exquisite. It is helpful, clearly portrayed, articulated, organised, logistical. - M
Please do send me any feedback, and thank you for following on my journey.
